Living in Colorado and being a keen gardener has been somewhat stressful in recent
years, as this state has been suffering drought conditions. In my home city the authorities are imposing watering restrictions which are not giving enough water to lawns and plants. I’ve had to reorganize my garden to make it more water efficient. Now, because of the techniques I’ve used, I’m the only one in my neighborhood with a garden that isn’t completely brown.

So,if you live in an area that is going through a drought or if you just want to save water, I suggest you use some of these techniques too.

For starters, I carefully removed all my plants. The soil I was using didn’t retain water
very well, so I had to water about twice as much as necessary in order to get it to actually absorb into the roots. If you have this same problem, you can fix it by loading the soil up with lots of compost. This not only prevents water from escaping, but encourages the plant’s roots to be healthy and able to survive more.

Having optimized the soil for my new low water consumption plan, I was ready to replace all my plants. I decided that the placement of all my plants would reflect the amount of water necessary to keep them alive. All the plants that don’t require much water I placed in on one side of mygarden, and then just progressed in the amount of required water to the other side of the garden. As a result of my new arrangement, I don’t have to waste water on plants that don’t need it as much.

The installation of a drip irrigation system was another move on my part that cut down the amount of water I needed to fully water my garden. The great thing about these systems is that they constantly drip into your plants, so that every single drop is used. With traditional watering systems, usually the roots get overwhelmed with the sheer amount of water in the soil. Lots just seeps right through. This is all taken care of with the drip system.

If you still seem to need more water than you can supply to your garden, you might think about which plants you could replace with less water dependent plants. If you want a good shrub that doesn’t use up too much water, look for Heavenly Bamboo. It is not only tolerant of droughts, but looks rather decorative in any garden. Herbs such as rosemary are useful in preparing meals, and are rarely thirsty.

If you’re trying to find flowers that will still be beautiful and lush despite the lower amounts of water, look for penstemon varieties like Apple Blossom, Garnet, Moonbeam, and Midnight. You can attract hummingbirds and butterflies with varieties like Cosmos and Yarrow. The best thing about all these plants is that they don’t look rugged and withstanding, but they certainly are.

One of my favorite drought resistant plants is the Lavender plant. I could go on for hours about it. A large group of Lavender plants looks unbelievably gorgeous in your garden, and hardly requires any water to flourish. Pineapple sage is another personal favorite. It is a 2+ foot shrub that smells strangely of pineapple. It’s another major attracter of hummingbirds, and the leaves are also useful to add taste to drinks.

So if you are in the position I was, and you’re dealing with a drought and perhaps watering regulations, I suggest you try some of the things I’ve mentioned. Even if you’re just trying to conserve water or be generally more efficient with it, I think you’ll still be able to benefit.

And, of course, your garden should be a place to relax. So why not build a pergola. It can work out quite inexpensive if you buy a pergola plan and either build it yourself or get a local handyman to do it for you. You’ll save hundreds of dollars compared with buying a pergola kit. Learn more

If you want to draw local wildlife into your garden, or just want to give your backyard a more natural look, then one potential solution that you should consider is the installation of one or more pond kits. Not only are these kits extremely economical to buy, but they are also easy to adjust or remove in the even that your needs ever change.

The basic parts of all preformed pond kits are pre molded pond kits, which are made of a composite material liner that is fitted over the top of an excavated site in your garden or backyard. After it has been secured, an attractive arrangement of pebbles, rocks, and vegetation is landscaped around and above the liner.

Once it has been filled with water, the local landscape and the reflection from the water effectively camouflage the liner so that it looks completely natural. There is no restriction on the size of pond as pre molded pond kits can vary in volume from a small pond with only thirty gallons of water to fantasy-sized water gardens with a thousand gallons or more of water. You’ll be able to find koi pond supplies so that you can enjoy the benefits of your water garden without breaking your budget in the process.

preformed pond kits can be used for more than only building a pond. There is a wide number of accessories that give you the ability to incorporate streams, waterfalls and fountainsfountains, streams and waterfalls, all of which will look good at any time, both day and at night. Through the addition of natural wildlife such as ideal place to relax during the evenings or weekends.

With the addition of a simple water pump and a filter it is possible to create the sound of a gently bubbling stream or waterfall. You may also choose to install an underwater light to give your pond that enchanted look when it’s dark out.

An additional way to enhance the appearance of preformed pond kits is with using silk water lilies. These are held in place with a weight and anchor line, and being made of silk they have the advantage that they won’t wilt or be eaten by local wildlife. Silk water lilies can be bought in a variety of sizes, from two and half inches, to seven and a half inches, and in gorgeous shades of red, pink, white and yellow.

The productivity and efficiency of operating a greenhouse is primarily dependent on the kind of growing materials used. So, Building a Greenhouse

Kinds of Greenhouses - Building a Greenhouse
Detached greenhouses generally independently stand from each other. However, they can be joined to gain access by way of a corridor to the other greenhouse.

The Quonset is the most common detached type of greenhouse for use in commercial production. These types are constructed using arched rafters that normally have end solid walls for added support. Quonset greenhouses types are appropriate for most crop varieties however the growing capacity is to a certain degree restricted close to “the side walls” which reduces productivity and efficiency.

Ridge greenhouses are joined through the eave with a shared gutter. Normally, an interior wall located underneath the gutter is absent permitting increased productivity.

Ridge greenhouses can either be curved arch or gabled. Gabled greenhouses are generally suitable for substantial coverings such as fiberglass or glass, whereas curved arch greenhouses are usually covered with much lighter materials such as polycarbonates or polyethylene. Many connected ridge greenhouses often are called “range”.

Planning

This is one of the very important steps which have to be taken into careful consideration by the grower. Proper area selection with connection to labor, markets, utilities as well as future expansion really makes a lot of difference in how the business will profit and grow.

Here are basic things to consider:

• Crops that you will be growing (potted plants, Bedding plants, perennials, herbs, vegetables, etc.)

• The growing period of the crops (seasonal or year-round)

• Plants that will be grown (flats, pots, hydroponics bed, troughs, etc.)

• Growing medium (no soil, soil, mix, compost, nutrient solution, etc.)

• Growing methods (flooring, movable or fixed benches, growing bags, beds and flood)

• Annual productivity (space that is required)

• Marketing technique (retail, wholesale or both)

• Investment or capital

Here are things to be considered when constructing a commercial greenhouse:

1. Space. The area required greatly depends on your kind of business whether retail or wholesale. The minimum space must be more or less two acres so to make available parking for employees and customers, driveway access for deliveries, area for storage and also for future expansion. A wholesale venture generally will require much more because the greenhouse will be a lot more bibber and wider.

2. Zoning. These are local regulations that controls land use and encourage safety, health and the community’s welfare. Note that greenhouse operations are permitted in particular zones only.

Frontage, distances of side yards, signs and also parking spaces should be specified. You should confirm with your zoning officer and ask what is required and ask regarding building codes so you will know if a permit will be needed.

3. Highway Access. Site location with regards to highways must be taken into account. For retail business, a location beside or along a high traffic road or beside a considerable residential site can greatly increase business. Wholesale business needs access to some interstate highway so to deal with heavy truck road traffic.

4. Environment. Select a location that is away from “industrial pollution”.

5. Climate. Avoid areas with extreme temperatures, as in the winter plant growth is directly related the light that is received.

6. Slope. Ground slope to provide water drainage is very important. Greenhouses must be situated on gravel base, 6-12 inches above grade.

7. Water. Plants need sufficient moisture supply for optimal development and the highest production of flowers. As to how much water is required will greatly be determined by how big is the area that will be watered, weather conditions, crops grown, time of the year and “the environment control system”.

Note that water that comes from “natural sources” have some amount of impurities present, and are at times harmful to plant growth. You should have the water tested for chemicals that can be present in your water system, to address the problem, if there is a problem.

8. Electricity. Your commercial greenhouse should have enough supply of electricity as well as distribution system must be provided so to supply and manage environment in the greenhouse. As early as in the designing stage of the greenhouse, you should already call on your area’s electric utility regarding power availability and also call on your electrician to design the electrical layout.

9. Expansion. All throughout the development and planning stage, provisions must be considered for later expansion.

Note that before going into the business, as in any business, careful assessment should be made before a decision is made. Plan it carefully. Good Luck.

Firstly, birds will be attracted by the geographic location of your garden.

To find out which birds are at the moment in the geographic area, you will have to consult the specialty magazines and books. Libraries and book stores have books based on migration, on the roads that some bird species take to get to their summer or winter residence. So it makes sense to do some research so you know what birds might come and in what season.

So what can you do to attract birds to your garden?

Birds need water. This is highly important. A bath or a pool, no matter the size or the material, would instantly attract many bird families, even wild ducks and gooses.

If you could also arrange a place where they could find some food, bird seeds, bread or anything else they might like, that would increase the chances they made an escapade in your garden. You can try, for instance with corn. Seeds of any type also hold an answer to the question related to attracting birds towards your garden. The seeds that almost all birds prefer are sun-flower seeds, extremely easy to find, and cheap also. Anyway, before buying the seeds, you should make a list with all the birds that are in the area and with every bird’s food preferences to assure you can provide food for many types of birds present.

A bird table would be an excellent project for any handyman.

These are the first steps that you have to make to attract birds in your garden. The second step is keeping away from the garden all the things that might scare or disturb birds. Animals from the next garden, neighbor’s dogs can scare the birds. Try and ask the neighbors to keep the dogs chained or in the house, because they are mostly scared by dogs.

Also, you must know that some birds do not agree with each other, so that a certain species might avoid your garden because there is another species in it. Some can also stay away because of the fact you have children and the noise is too loud, and others can stay away because the place doesn’t look natural enough. So, knowing their nature and customs can be a decisive factor in bringing them in our backyard.

And, of course, a garden should be a great place to relax with family and friends too. So why not build a pergola. It’s not as difficult as you think and if you buy a set of pergola plans, and get a local handyman to do it for you you’ll save hundreds of dollars. Learn more:

You probably have neither the time nor inclination to produce a lawn that looks like a putting green, but having said that, if you’ve got grass then you want it to look healthy. Your Turf is a plant just like any other perennial in your garden, and so it needs a bit of care and attention to be able to grow and thrive and show itself off to your neighbours!

Lawn Care means regular cutting through the growing season, and regular accurate application of a good Grass Fertilizer. Begin cutting in late spring when you can see new growth. Set the cut between 1.5 – 2,5cm high. Cut once or twice a week depending on the speed of growth. As growth slows during autumn, mow less often and rarely in winter, and never when it’s frosty.

There are a number of Lawn Care products on the market for “Feeding” or “Weeding”. Most are in pellet form and if you don’t apply it evenly you can get uneven colour and growth. You must apply these pellet fertilizers just before it rains as there’s a risk that you’re grass may ‘burn’ as the pellets [spin]remaining|resting[/spin on the leaves scorch the foliage if the sun is strong.

To overcome this risk you should use a Quality Liquid Lawn Fertilizer. You should commence feeding your lawn at 4 to 6 week intervals starting in March through to October. Use Superspray type Lawn Sprayers to apply the Grass Fertilizer to your lawn. Connected to your hose pipe, this sprayer mixes the concentrated Grass Fertilizer as you spray. It’s much easier to get a more even feed with less effort, it’s not as time consuming and there’s no risk of scorching either. It’s better if you feed either early morning or late evening to minimise evaporation.

When it comes to weeding you’ll see that regular clipping coupled with regular accurate application of a Quality Grass Fertilizer will discourage or even get rid of most of the moss algae and weeds that start to take over when your lawn is undernourished.

As you look at your lawn the most obvious weeds are the bigger broad leaved ones like Dandelion, plantains and so on. Mowing & Feeding your grass will eventually get rid of these, but if you can’t wait; you can just dig these out with a long blade knife but you’re then left with a small bare patch that if not grassed will become home to another weed.

Here’s a great idea for you! Next time you’re in the Garden Centre, look out for the pot carrying trays which the plants are standing in. Garden Centres usually throw these trays away and so can be “free” for the asking. Look for one with the circles about 8cm across. Fill these with seed compost and sow grass seed in each circle. In no time you’ll have a small disc of turf ideal for making an instant repair after removing the offending weed. The turfs can last as long as you want them to; just keep cutting with scissors.

In Organic gardening , just as in any garden, it’s extremely disheartening to find your newly planted brassicas have been chewed in the night by slugs and its easy to reach for the slug pellets, but you could do more to cut the slug population in your garden yourself. After all, slug pellets aren’t the best things for you to eat, and just when the slugs are most active (in wet weather) the pellets are least effective. Slug pellets can also kill some of the most beneficial insects and beetles. Birds and animals eating the dead slugs littered on the surface could also be harmed if you don’t remove them quickly.

The Garden Slug which is a burrower and surface feeder will eat roots and sever plants at the bottom of the stem while the Keel slug lives underground and attacks roots and potatoes. The huge long slugs that you see do very little damage to your vegetables as they live on rotting vegetation and fungi etc.

If you don’t like to use slug pellets but prefer to practice some type of Organic gardening pest control then there’s a range of things you can do to cut the slug populations in your garden.

Good cultivation of the soil in spring exposes the slugs and their eggs to various predators, but if you practice a no dig style of cultivation, then keep the weeds down, because they are additionally a food source for slugs.

Beer and milk traps are valuable but you should set the tin into the ground keeping the rim about 1.5cm above ground level to prevent helpful beetles etc from dropping in. You need to set the tins about one metre apart in a grid format.

Slug collecting at night is very successful in drastically reducing the population in your garden. On a warm dampish evening you leave the house with a torch and a cane with a lengthy darning needle stuck in one end. Stick the slugs where you spot them and drop them into a container of salt. Sounds disgusting, I know, but very much worth the effort. You may get the maximum slugs this way.

You can multiply the number of beneficial insects that hunt on slugs by placing small wooden boards or roofing tiles between rows as shelter for predatory beetles and insects. Slugs will also be attracted, and these you can easily remove along with their eggs.

If all this seems a little too ‘hands on’ then I suggest you think about a commercial type of Organic gardening pest control in the form of microscopic worms known as Nematode worms.

A natural parasite of the slug, these nematodes (or to give them their proper plural, nematoda) are naturally present in their millions in all well balanced garden soil. Nematode worms infest the slug by laying their eggs inside its body, so killing the slug during the Nematodes’ reproductive cycle. The Nematode worms, when applied to the garden, boost the natural population of Nematode worms in your patch, providing increased natural Organic gardening pest control.

You apply the Nematoda by watering can or by Superspray type garden feeder attached to a hosepipe for larger areas. Once you cease applications the population of Nematode worms will fall to its original numbers.

You should enjoy up to 6 weeks long lasting control from one application, and Nematode worms are safe for children pets and wildlife. They’re safe for use on food plants and aren’t adversely affected by rain.

Organic Garden Snail & Slug Control in the Organic gardens vegetable plot is all about holding the slug population at an absolute minimum and so maximising your return on your vegetable yield.

My apartment complex is covered in graffiti, it looks absolutely horrible . I know that the property managers make enough money off of us renters to pay for Facade Cleaning or sand it off and down or whatever to clean that up. My building stands out from the rest, looking dilapidated and depressing . I actually live in a great neighborhood, very little violence . It’s full of yuppies and pretentious young artists for the most part. So that outside wall really stands out. I probably won’t be living in this building for very much longer, but I would at least like it if I brought a girl home and had my place look somewhat respectful, I don’t want her to be scared to stay the night because of all the graffiti on the wall of the complex . I understand that I am just renting but I hate pointing out to friends and family that I live in the only dilapidated building in the area, where it looks like it was the hiding place for gang members and their opposition . I know that this is not a permanent thing for me but honestly I am so embarrassed to show anyone my place because I think even if you don’t own it, where you live says a lot about who you are as a person . I constantly give everyone way too much credit, but I don’t see others doing that for me . However, like I said, I’ll probably be moving so I won’t really care towards the end of this year.

When conducting Husqvarna saw reviews you need to consider the three levels of chainsaws you will come across.

What do we mean by three levels? Well, there are chainsaws made specifically for professional loggers and those who handle these powerful machines on a daily basis to make a living. If you’re a homeowner then you won’t be looking at these saws for the odd pruning jobs around the home.

There are also chainsaws within the Husqvarna range which cater to the semi pro user such as people living on the land. In other words, those based on a ranch or in the horticultural industry who will need to get their hands on a chainsaw on a regular basis.

And of course there is the homeowner and you need to pay attention to any Husqvarna chainsaw reviews when searching for these type of chainsaws to make sure they are quiet enough so as not to upset the neighbors.

We are going to take a look at some of the top choices in the Husqvarna chainsaw range covering the three categories mentioned above.

Husqvarna Pro

Husqvarna’s 372XP is true professional’s chainsaw and if you’re a homeowner in the market then read further down because purchasing this powerful machine will not be what you’re looking for.

The 372XP should be part of any Husqvarna saw reviews. It’s built for demanding jobs such as felling and logging and oozes heavy duty. The 372XP features extra heavy duty application in it’s crankcase and crankshaft. One of it’s appealing features from a safety angle is it’s lightweight yet it doesn’t lack power.

Safety for professional chainsaw users is vital with fatigue a contributing cause to accidents. Lightweight chainsaws help in this department and the 372XP has excellent anti-vibration, another safety feature especially when things gget hectic such as working with heavy loads at high speeds.

Husqvarna Semi Pro

One saw worth considering from the Husqvarna range is the 338XPT. This saw has been recently upgraded and it has definitely improved in the area of power. Safety again is featured especially given it’s compact design which makes it easily to control and flexible for the user.

Semi-professional saws are usually designed in a similar vein to their pro cousins but have a slightly reduced power ratio. They suit people in the horticultural industry and those living the ranch life as well as arborists which the 338XPT suits perfectly.

Husqvarna Lite

While price will come into play concerning homeowners and no doubt, many will be drawn to the cheaper electric and budget models however, before you do you should check Husqvarna’s 235 and 240 e-series.

The 235 e-series is a relatively new model ideal for those needing pruning and light cutting jobs performed around the house. Meanwhile, the 240 e-series is a fraction more powerful yet both a similar in features including Husqvarna’s easy start. These chainsaws are specifically designed with the homeowner in mind.

Another aspect of homeowner style chainsaws to consider is their low power which contributes to low noise, vital for those in suburban areas and lightweight handling. Be sure to look for these factors when conducting Husqvarna saw reviews.

Every serious gardener needs a hard-working garden tiller for cultivating new garden beds. A good garden tiller can go from the toughest job of busting up hardpan soil to lightly cultivating the soil around your precious garden plants. You’ll want to also keep in mind that garden tillers inevitably break down sooner or later, so check the prices of replacement parts for garden tillers as part of the buying process. Naturally, you’ll want to compare features and pricing between garden tillers so you get the best bargain for your money. Your garden tiller needs will most certainly differ from your neighbor’s, so choose wisely about the features in a tiller that are most important to you.

Some tillers can be fitted with attachments to do jobs other than garden tilling. Some of the small hand-held models can be equipped with dethatching tines or rotary brushes. Some of the larger rear-tine tillers can handle a snow/dirt blade or a middle buster (lister); and can have the entire tiller assembly replaced with a sicklebar mower, a shredder/grinder or even a generator. These attachments can be useful, but may not work as well as separate machines. You have to decide whether this capability will be useful for you.

A rotary tiller can contribute to the health of your garden soil by incorporating cover crops and green manure crops. A tiller can also be used in planting cover crops. After a seedbed is prepared, you can broadcast seed and then run the tiller over the ground at high speed and minimum depth to cover the seeds. A tiller is most effective at covering larger seeds such as peas. Small cover crop seeds such as ryegrass may be covered too deeply by a tiller; raking or dragging is more effective for small seeds.

The best purpose for a front tine tiller is maintaining soil that has been cultivated already. Try to till a new garden bed just one time and you’ll understand the work involved in using a front tine tiller. But get one of these tillers in a cultivated garden bed and they are pretty easy to work with. So if you’ve moved into your new home and there is an old garden that you plan to cultivate, then you should be able to get by with one of these tillers. Front tine tillers are also a little easier on the pocket book.

——————

You may have neither the time nor inclination to look after a lawn that looks like a putting green, but having said that, if you’ve got lawn then you want it to look lush. Your Turf is a plant just like any other perennial in your garden, and so it needs a bit of care and attention to be able to grow and thrive and show itself off to your neighbours!

Lawn Care means regular mowing throughout the growing season, and regular accurate application of a good Liquid Lawn Fertilizer. Start mowing in late spring when you can see new growth. Set the cut between 1.5 – 2,5cm high. Cut once or twice a week depending on the speed of growth. As growth slows during autumn, cut less often and rarely in winter, and never when it’s frosty.

There are a multitude of Lawn Care products on the market for “Feeding” or “Weeding”. Most are in pellet form and if you don’t apply it evenly you can see uneven colour and growth. You need to apply these pellet fertilizers just before it rains as there’s a risk that you’re grass may ‘burn’ as the pellets resting on the leaves scorch the foliage if the sun is strong.

To overcome this risk you should use a Quality Lawn Fertilizer. You should start feeding your lawn at 4 to 6 week intervals starting in March through to October. Use Superspray type Hose End Sprayers to apply the Liquid Lawn Fertilizer to your lawn. Connected to your hose pipe, this sprayer dilutes the concentrated Liquid Lawn Fertilizer as you spray. It’s much easier to get a more even feed with less effort, it’s not as time consuming and there’s no risk of scorching either. It’s better if you feed either early morning or late evening to minimise evaporation.

When it comes to weeding you’ll see that regular cutting coupled with regular accurate application of a Quality Liquid Lawn Fertilizer will discourage or even get rid of most of the moss algae and weeds that begin to take over when your lawn is undernourished.

If you look at your lawn the most obvious weeds are the larger flat leaved ones like Dandelion, plantains and such. Mowing & Feeding your lawn will over time get rid of these, but if you can’t wait; you can just cut these out with a long blade knife but you’re then left with a small bare patch that if not grassed will become home to another weed.

Here’s a good trick for you! Next time you’re in the Garden Centre, look out for the pot carrying trays which the plants are standing in. Garden Centres usually throw these trays away and so can be “free” for the asking. Look for one with the circles about 8cm across. Fill these with seed compost and sow grass seed in each circle. In no time you’ll have a little disc of turf ideal for making an instant repair after removing the offending weed. The turfs can last as long as you want them to; just keep cutting with scissors.

Have you ever stopped to consider what the difference is between good taste and tacky? There seems to be a fine line, but you can always tell when it has been crossed. We live in an area where most people take great pride in how their yards look. People tend to mow their grass regularly, plant flowers and have lawn furniture set out to enjoy the views of the lake. There are some yards in our neighborhood that have been featured in a lakeside living magazine. There are also a few yards that people are embarrassed to live next to. These are the yards that have crossed the line into tacky.

We live on a scenic drive so we consider our neighborhood to be the row of houses from the beginning of the drive to the first turn off which is about one and a half miles. About a half mile from our house is a beautiful stone house. This house has a circle driveway, formal flower beds and a beautiful beach area. They have a wind sock with the family name hanging on the end of their dock. Next door to this house is a home that was sold a year ago. When the house was sold it was painted a mocha color with darker brown trim. It was always referred to as the house next to the stone house. The new owners did not like being this anonymous. They painted the house a very bright yellow with purple shutters and trim. They hung a wind sock off of the television antenna on the roof. They also painted their dock yellow and purple and hung a wind sock on the end of the dock. They have their lawn mowed and have bright flowers growing in flower beds. They also have several benches and a swing that they have also painted yellow and purple. They had a wind sock specially made that is yellow and purple and has their name on it. This wind sock hangs at the end of their driveway and is four times the size of a normal wind sock.

The flamboyant colors have caused quite a raucous in the neighborhood. The man and woman that bought the house are new to our area. They would go to the local bar when they first moved in, however the man has a short temper and was asked to leave a few times. We were told that he would get angry when people would describe his house as the one next to the stone house. People are speculating that this is why he chose the bright colors for the house, lawn furniture and wind sock. Now people give directions using the yellow and purple house as their point of reference.

We all have our own taste regarding what we want to surround ourselves with. My husband and I have mixed traditional furniture along with a few antiques. We decided to incorporate antiques into our home because it is over a hundred years old. We have used soft colors on the walls in the various rooms of our home. We both work in offices that have all white walls so we decided to use color on the walls at home.

My girl friend and her husband have very modern tastes. They have their living room and guess bath room done in black and white. She wants to create a similar effect in their yard. She bought black pots and was going to fill them with white flowers. She knows that I like to garden so she asked me to visit the nursery with her to help pick out the white flowers. I personally thought this sounded like a boring idea. Their home is white with black trim. The white flowers would blend into the background of the house and would not be noticeable. My friend insisted that this is what she wanted. We picked out several long lasting annuals that do well in containers. She bought petunias, salvias, star flowers, geraniums and begonias. The white flowers were pretty, but I felt they needed color. I did talk her into buying some greens to plant in the pots with the white flowers.

We brought the flowers to her house and I helped her transplant the small plants into the containers. This was in the spring of the year. We live about eighty miles apart so we do not get to each other’s home very often. We usually meet mid way between our homes when we get together. I asked her often how the planters were coming along. Her answer was always that they were growing. In mid July I stopped to see my friend at her house. I could not believe it when I walked up to her door step. The white flowers were beautiful and were growing very well. In the middle of each pot the white geraniums were replaced with a vibrant red one. The combination was great. My friend had an additional surprise for me in the house. She had bought red accent pillows for the living room as well as some red glass pieces. In the bathroom she decorated with red towels and rugs. The splash of color made the rooms appear warmer and more welcoming. My friend said that the white flowers helped her make the decision to add some color. The flowers were beautiful, but no one noticed them because they blended in to their background. The red color caught people’s attention, and then the entire pot was admired.

Many people who maintain gardens have a large amount of organic waste, from grass clippings to leaves and dead plants. Sadly, many waste money and time having these wastes transported to a landfill. It isn’t just a waste of good compost; it’s a waste of everything that goes into the process of transporting it (the garbage man’s time, the money you pay for the removal, etc).

All this garbage that people are trying to get rid of can be a better supplement for your garden than any fertilizer or chemical. If you properly facilitate the decomposition of all of the garbage, it will alter chemically until it is in such a state that it can be nothing but beneficial nutrition for other plants. So you can turn all the stuff you would have thrown away into top grade fertilizer for your garden.

Usually compost is maintained in a pile somewhere in your backyard. Generally the thought of a compost heap brings disturbing images to ones mind; heaps of rotten garbage emitting a horrid odor. However, if you maintain it correctly you’ll be able to produce great compost without producing an offensive odor. When I first began my compost pile in an effort to improve environmental health, I made several major errors. These included preventing the pile from the oxygen it needed, and keeping it too dry. It ended up decomposing in a very non-beneficial way, and producing an odor so foul that I had government agents knocking at my door.

A compost heap can consist of any organic garbage from your yard, garden or kitchen. This includes leaves, grass, any leftover food that won’t be eaten, or newspaper (no more than a fifth of your pile should consist of newspaper, due to it having a harder time composting with the rest of the materials). Generally if you have a barrel devoted to storing all of these things, it will fill up within several weeks. It is quite easy to obtain compost, but the hard part truly comes in getting it to compost.

After you have begun to get a large assortment of materials in your compost heap, you have to moisten the whole pile. This encourages the process of composting. Also chop every element of the pile into the smallest pieces possible. As the materials start to compress and meld together as they decompose, frequently head outside and aerate the pile. You can use a shovel to mix it all up, or an aeration tool to poke dozens of tiny holes into it. Doing this will increase the oxygen flow to each part of the pile, and oxygen is essential for any decomposition to take place.

You can have the most elaborate back yard in your entire community, but if it isn’t functional you have created it all in vain. Yes, we all want to have beautiful and flourishing gardens, but when we have a family, we must also take into account the needs of everyone in the home. For example you might divide your back yard into two or three visual areas, one for play and relaxation, one for gardening and maybe one for pets.

An open space, covered by lawn is ideal for children. This could also be a good spot to have a table for open air lunches or for a summer evening dinner.

Do you have a fireplace? Keep a portion of your back yard specifically for storing fire woods, but ensure it is at a reasonable distance from the house or animals that could cause damage.

How about pets? For these little members of your family you could create their own special space where they can play and exercise. Cordon off the pet space with suitable materials Don’t use bushes and ornamental plants for this. Cats and dogs tend to be attracted exactly by the very things we try to keep them away from.

Find a suitable place for your garbage bins. After all you don’t want to be relaxing next to these unsightly, but essential onjects. Perhaps think about surrounding them by some suitable fencing or other matertials. That way they do not dominate or spoil the lovely back yard you’ve worked so hard to create.

Functionality is an important element in the success of a backyard garden, so you have to think about children, pets and family before you plant anything. You create a small portion of the yard especially for you, in which you can plant whatever you want. It’s your own special place. The rest of the family have the remainder of the garden to relax or play in.

You will find it more satisfying this way, when the whole family is happy with the garden and they might even bring their personal ideas for it.

As with the house itself, it is important that personal space is respected and that is why the garden element of the back yard must not be too large, taking up all available space. Build from time to time a pathway or some benches where you can just relax and admire your work.

And how about a special place to relax or entertain family and friends? If that appeal then a pergola is the ideal solution. That might sound like an expensive solution. But it does not have to be. Not if you buy a pergola plan and either build it yourself or get a local handyman to build it for you. Learn more:

I used to do bookkeeping for a small business in my area. They were new where when I met them, having just moved down from a town about a half hour from where we live. They told us that they had been in a building that sustained flood damage in the basement. After a few months, they all started getting really sick, and no one knew why. It got so bad that the woman had almost no short-term memory, and she was passing out all of the time. As it turned out, there was mold in the basement from the flood, and it would have taken a long time for mold removal. They decided to cut their loss and move their business.

If you have had water in your basement, you should do a thorough check to make sure you don’t have any mold like they did. It can be dangerous and can grow at an alarming rate. Mold can make you and your entire family sick and mold removal doesn’t always take care of the problem. If you find it in your home, you have to call someone who specializes in mold removal. They may tell you that you have to find somewhere else to stay while they get rid of it, or they may say the house cannot be saved.

You don’t even have to have a flood to get mold growing in your home. It can grow behind your walls from a water leak and you might not even know it. If you or anyone in your home seems to be getting sick for no reason, you should call in someone to see if you need to have a mold removal service. If they find something, get out until they can tell you what is going on and if they can help you.

You can find mold removal service in almost any town, but make sure they have the proper credentials. They should be able to inspect your house and tell you how much it will cost you for mold removal, and they should be able to tell you why it happened in the first places. In some cases, the mold is so bad that a home must be vacated and is deemed uninhabitable. It’s not common but it does happen. If you don’t want to lose your home, make sure you do thorough inspections if you have flooding in your basement.

If you’re looking for ways to keep your garden watered without wasting too much time and money, you’ve probably gone through a lot of options in your mind. Maybe you’ve thought about a sprinkler, a hose, or a good old-fashioned watering can. All of these methods might be convenient, but most of the time you will end up wasting water on plants that don’t need any more. If you live in a drought stricken area like I do, you know that every bit of water counts.

I ended up getting a drip irrigation system. I haven’t regretted this decision at all.

When you install a drip irrigation system, you can opt for one of two varieties: above ground and below ground. The above ground version drips small amounts of water continuously onto the ground, and allows it to soak in. It is all regulated from a pressure controller, which ensures that the water just comes out at a drip instead of a spray or a stream. These pressure regulators are very inexpensive. The whole drip system can be set up with a pressure regulator and a garden hose with holes poked in it (although it is ideal for you to get a pipe designed for this type of use, I’ve found that the hose method works acceptably).

The underground system is a bit more of a pain to install and maintain. But if you’re really into the aesthetic aspect of your garden and don’t want any visible watering system, then you might consider it worth it. It’s essentially the same as the above ground version, only a small trench is dug for the hose or pipe prior to any planting. This allows the water direct access to the roots for the most watering efficiency. And, you can impress your neighbors by having a beautiful garden without ever going outside to water it! They’ll be baffled.

To choose between the two systems, you need to take several things into account. Do you have the same plant layout year round? If it is always changing, you probably won’t want to bury your hose. It can be a pain to dig it up and re-align it with all your new plants every year or so. Even if your plant layout never changes, you need to think about how much you really mind seeing a hose in your garden. If it really bothers you to the extent that you’re willing to work for a few hours to get rid of it, then by all means bury it. But otherwise I would suggest staying above ground if for nothing else than the convenience of repairing and rearranging.

One of the main advantages of the drip irrigation system is its efficiency. Instead of spraying large amounts of water willy-nilly like a hose does, it makes the most of your precious water by putting it exactly where it is needed. It can also provide your garden with constant watering, instead of just having to go thirsty whenever you’re not around to water it.

So if you’re looking for an easy, cheap, convenient, and efficient alternative watering method, you should go out to the gardening store today and purchase the necessary items to install a drip irrigation system.

f you’re not the type of person that wants to spend their time managing an elaborate fruit or vegetable garden, you might want to consider planting and maintaining an herb garden. While the product might not seem as significant, you’ll still enjoy the constant availability of fresh, delicious herbs to flavor your meals with.

First you’ll need to pick the herbs that you’ll plant. You might have a hard time doing this because of the huge choice of herbs available. But the best way to choose is to do what I did; just look at what you have in your kitchen. By planting your own collection of these herbs, you can save money on buying them from the grocery store while having the added benefit of freshness. Some of the herbs you might start with include rosemary, sage, basil, dill, mint, chives, and parsley.

When choosing an area to put your herb garden, you should remember that the soil should have extremely good drainage. If the dirt gets watered and stays completely saturated, you have no chance of ever growing a healthy plant. One of the best ways to fix the drainage problem is to dig a foot deep in the soil, and put a layer of crushed rocks down before replacing all the soil. This will allow all that water to escape, thus saving your plants.

When you are ready to begin planting herbs, you might be tempted to buy the more expensive plants from the store. However, with herbs it is much easier to grow them from seed than it is with other plants. Therefore you can save a bundle of money by sticking with seed packets. Some herbs grow at a dangerously quick rate. For example, if you plant a mint plant in an open space then it will take over that area in a matter of days. The best way to prevent this problem is to plant the more aggressive plants in pots (with holes in the bottom to allow drainage, of course).

When it comes time to harvest the herbs you have labored so hard over, it can be fatal to your plant to take off too much. If your plant isn’t well established, it isn’t healthy to take any leaves at all, even if it looks like its not using them. You should wait until your plant has been well established for at least several months before taking off any leaves. This wait will definitely be worth it, because by growing unabated your plant will produce healthily for years to come.

Once you’ve harvested your delicious home grown herbs, you’ll want to use them in cooking. Why else would you have grown them? Well first the process begins with drying them out. This is easily achieved by placing them on a cookie sheet and baking them 170 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 to 4 hours. After they’re sufficiently dried to be used in cooking, you can consult the nearest cookbook for instructions on using them to effectively flavor a dish.

If you want to store your herbs for later usage, you should keep them in a plastic or glass container. Paper or cardboard will not work, because it will absorb the taste of the herbs. During the first few days of storage, you should regularly check the container and see if any moisture has accumulated. If it has, you must remove all the herbs and re-dry them. If moisture is left from the first drying process, it will encourage mildew while you store your herbs. Nobody likes mildew.

So if you enjoy herbs or gardening, or both, then you should probably consider setting up an herb garden. It might require a little bit of work at first to set it up for optimal drainage, and pick what herbs you want to grow. But after the initial hassle, it’s just a matter of harvesting and drying all your favorite herbs.

The beautiful Columbine flower belongs to the genus Aquilegia, one of the most common and prolific flowering plants in the Northern hemisphere. The common name, Columbine, derives from Latin and means “dove”. You’ll see why if you view the flower from beneath – it looks very much like a flock of doves circled around a bird bath.

The columbine flower is popular with home gardeners for their simple and delicate beauty. They are also found as wildflowers in meadow, mountain and woodland settings as well as in home gardens. The Columbine flower is favored by hummingbirds attracted to the nectar. Hummingbirds help to pollinate the field of Columbine flowers by carrying the pollen smudged on their heads from flower to flower.

There are some 65 species of this delightful flower, ranging in size from just three inches to almost three feet tall. These plants bloom in late spring and into early summer. They enjoy lightly shaded locations in areas where heat is intense, such as in the South, while at high altitudes and in more temperate areas, the Columbine flower grows in full sun. All varieties grow taller in direct proportion to the warmth of their climate.

Native Americans used the seeds of the Columbine flower medicinally, preparing an infusion of the seeds to treat headache and fever.

Essential to growing Columbine is well-drained soil. Heavy clay soils won’t do for this perennial, as waterlogged roots will cause them to die in winter. As long as the soil is well-drained, these plants are not fussy. Average potting soil will do just fine.

When planting, space taller varieties a foot apart and shorter varieties six inches apart. Colors of the Columbine flower virtually span the rainbow, including white, yellow, blue and pink.

Although individual plants may not last for more than a few years, they propagate from seed in a very prolific manner. Starting with just two species in your garden, you’ll soon have hybrids galore. The Columbine flower produces lots and lots of seeds. The only problem with hybrids is that they do not produce plants exactly like the parent. There is a way around this. As the new hybrids grow, just pull those you don’t like before they set seed. Keep the ones you do like. Within several generations, you’ll have a bed of your own attractive hybrid Columbine flowers.

In Europe, the common Columbine, Aquilegia vulgaris, is known as “Granny’s Bonnet”, growing 18 to 24 inches tall. Like all Columbines, cross breeding over many centuries with so many species has blurred the original species to the point where identifying the original is almost impossible.

A bed of Columbine flowers is a delight in the garden. A visit to your nursery will yield a panoply of choices sure to please.

Families are spending more time in their backyards. They are looking into fresh outdoor landscaping ideas. The patio is an additional living space and with great landscaping patio design can add tons of value to your home.

Outdoor Landscape Plants

When choosing a new design for your backyard space it is important to find outdoor landscape plants that are native to your area that can tolerate the your weather. In the moderate temperatures of Southern California many types of plants flourish without much care. But in the harsher northern parts of the U.S., where there are definite seasons, weather tolerant plants need to be considered. The perennials are great because they go dormant in the winter and then pop in the spring bringing color to your outdoor landscape.

Landscape Patio Design

Potted plants are the mainstay of landscaping patio design. Find artful pots and plant dwarf trees that produce beautiful fall colors. A small pond and waterfall with koi and water-lilies can be a soothing addition to any patio landscape. A wood-burning chimney can add warmth to an intimate gathering.

Outdoor Kitchen Designs

A well designed outdoor kitchen will set the scene for memorable entertaining. Having everything you need conveniently located to grill and cook for your guests allows you to be a part of the patio party.

Outdoor Patio Furniture

Landscaping patio design also requires casual a sitting area to visit with guests on a cool evening. It is important to find sturdy, long lasting, weather resistant furniture to go with your newly designed landscape. Patio furniture comes in many styles from formal to very casual. Teak patio furniture can look both formal and casual. Iron grill furniture takes on a very formal and stately look.

Research and Design

Outdoor landscaping ideas that have been carefully researched to fit in with your area and your personality will provide years of enjoyment for your family. If you are not comfortable with making these design decisions visit a professional landscape architect. He will know what plants work well in your area. He should also be aware of your family’s personality. Are you athletic types or do you just want a peaceful and tranquil area to relax and entertain in? Do you live near a body of water or do you want to add a man-made body of water that looks natural?

Whatever choice you make do plenty of research and compare prices and styles. Outdoor landscaping can be expensive you will want to choose something you can enjoy for many years.

There is nothing like a green lawn. Though you may have on naturally, you may find that some years you have to work to keep it as green as you would like it to be. There are some years when the rainfall is not what is should be, and you have to take care or you will end up with a brown or patchy lawn. If your lawn has sustained heavy damage, you may have to start all over again in order to get the lawn you want.

A green lawn is often not an accident. Though grass is supposed to be green, there are a lot of things that can mar the perfect lawn. If there is not enough rainfall, you have to water your lawn. It used to be said that you should do it in the middle of the night, but I have read lately that this is not necessary. If you do this and it is convenient for you, there is no reason to stop. However, if you have to water during the day to maintain a green lawn there is no reason why you can’t. It used to be thought that watering in the daylight led to damage when the water would evaporate. This, apparently, is not true. So water when you can, just don’t overdo it.

If proper watering does not yield you a green lawn, you may have a weed problem. Weeds tend to be green as well, but they can choke out your grass and leave you with a patchy lawn. You should find a safe weed fighter to get rid of those plants, and make sure you continue to water. Remember that even if you get the perfect green lawn you may have to continue to work at it. Weeds like dandelions can blow in from neighbors’ yards, so you may never get any rest.

If you have given up on a green lawn, you may have to start all over again. You can reseed your lawn with a good seed that should give you the look you want. It can be a daunting process, so make sure you know what you are getting into before you start. Talk with someone at a home and garden shop to find out what it might cost you and what kind of work is involved. They can help you get a green lawn, but you have to do it right.

Several years ago we moved into our present home. We were lucky enough to find a lake home that we could afford. When we drove into the yard with the realtor I knew that I was home. Everything about the yard of our home invites people to come and linger. The house is over a hundred years old and sits at the top of a small hill. The hill slopes down to the lake shore. On the north side of the house are huge old maple trees on the south side of the house is a gazebo that over looks the lake and additional maple trees. The front of the house as well as the backyard area has huge flower beds, filled with perennials. There is a winding walkway from the house to the garage. On either side of the path are additional flower beds.

The first time we went to the house with the realtor was in the spring. At that time there were tulips, daffodils, and crocus blooming and fern fronds and hostas were beginning to grow in all of the flower beds. The realtor explained that the couple that was selling the house both loved gardening. He was a grounds keeper at a local resort and she was a teacher, so she had the summer off to tend to the flower gardens. She was a master gardener. The house, because of its age needed some cosmetic attention, but it has very sound construction. The kitchen cabinets needed updating and the wallpaper in the rooms needed to be taken out, but we love the layout of the rooms. The home is one and a half stories the upper level is the master bedroom suite with its own raised deck overlooking the lake. We made a contingency offer based on the sale of our house.

Everything fell into place with the sale of our other property and we moved into the lake home at the end of July. Our friends and family that helped us move could not believe the number of flower beds in the yard. The yard was alive with color. The previous owners had planted the flower beds so that there was always something blooming. The phlox and cone flowers were in full bloom when we moved in and the holly hocks were just starting to open.

We have a walking and bike path that goes past the house. We had several people stop and compliment the yard and the beautiful flower beds. In the fall the walkers and bikers stop to take pictures of the beautiful maples and colorful sumac. My husband and I are beginning to worry about keeping up with the flower beds so that the yard will continue to look nice.

We all lust for the finer things in life. To some these include yachts, trips to Jamaica, lobster dinners, and diamonds galore, but to others they simply include a cozy home with family and a crackling fireplace. Which type of person are you? Hey, now days you can even make that an electric fireplace heater. Some folks are content with the contemporary, low maintenance solutions. I will be the first to admit that I love rustic ambience, and I can’t live without my wood-burning fireplace. However, that doesn’t mean that I simply oppose the alternatives. Who ever said that you can’t have both?

Recently I was checking into electric fireplace heaters and gas fireplaces. I wanted to determine how difficult it would be to turn my wood-burning fireplace into a gas one. My wife has been wanting to do this for the past couple of years. I completely oppose, and can’t see what difference it makes to her. I do all the wood-burning, chopping and cleaning up any way. Fortunately the way our fireplace is set up, it would be quite expensive to convert it into a gas fireplace. Fortunately for me anyway. As it turned out, my wife was just craving a fireplace that she could manage easily on her own. It was time for a electric fireplace heater. Have you seen how cool these are now days? I looked at the electric substitutes they have at Lowe’s and was rather impressed. Some are ideal for a bedroom or second family area. Or, if you do not have a fireplace at all; an electric fireplace heater would be perfect for any home. It’s more about aesthetics and ambience than anything else. Although some do radiate some generous heat.

Before you look into a gas fireplace installation, you should check out the simple and inexpensive alternative known as the electric fireplace heater. They truly do look like a real fireplace. Get one as large or small as you like. You plug them into the wall, and never worry about fire wood, matches, gas or cleaning. Pretty efficient if you ask me. Anyone can operate an electric fireplace heater, because all it takes is the flip of a switch. You’ll
